**NOTE on the Animated Intro: I’m ambivalent about this scene.
Argument for NOT including it in bodycount:
1. Because one of the two “Play” options on the Main Menu is “Play Movie with Animated Intro” (the other one is the standard “Play Movie.”), one might argue that the extended feature film doesn’t necessarily include the Animated Intro.
2. It’s also not a typical animation, it’s actually a succession of extremely high-resolution (at least 30MP) still photographs of the actors themselves edited in Photoshop with a special filter to look like Tim Bradstreet's original cover artwork, voiced by the actors edited together to tell the story.
3. Although not specifically called a deleted scene, the Animated Intro is a separate feature under “Special Features.” A sort of special deleted scene.
On the other hand:
1. It is part of the movie if the first viewing option is chosen.
2. Also, there is no specific section under “Special Features” called “Deleted Scenes”, so one can argue the deleted scenes have been added back to the movie for the Extended version. The Animated Intro would then be considered not quite a deleted scene, it’s special enough to be featured separately under the “Special Features” menu AND to be included in playback under the main menu.
3. Lastly, even though the animation is unusual, it’s still a form of animation. In the Special Feature called Tour of Duty: The Making of the Extended Cut, this scene is described as a sort of stylized animatic.
I don’t know if I’m making any sense. I’ve included two screenshots below. Personally I lean towards including it in the count, since this is an extended cut DVD. To me it would be rather odd to have a section called “deleted scenes” on an extended or director’s cut DVD. At least I don’t remember any on all the director’s and extended cuts DVDs that I own (I’ll have to check them again). I mean… what’s the point? It’s an extended cut. I thought the purpose of an extended cut was to include those deleted scenes that the director wanted to include in the first place. If there’s a section called “deleted scenes” on an extended DVD, then should I expect an extended cut of the extended version later? OK, I’m rambling. Sorry.
I’m guessing they wanted to emphasize how special the Animated Introduction is and they wanted to draw attention to the fact that it’s been added to the extended version. I may be just making something out of nothing. So my vote would be to include it in the body count.
But you’re the boss, Jen, so I’m including a separate count for the Animated Intro and you can add it or not according to your discretion. I’ll also give two different total and character counts, one with Animated Intro, one without.
How would you guys vote?
