 300 (finalized)
« Thread Started on Mar 9, 2007, 5:57am »

As expected this one will have to wait until the DVD. I do have some minor numbers but the battles are absolutely spectacular!! It's not even worth posting anything until we can do the entire film.

I suspect this will end up in the #2 slot if not the #1.

I believe this is the first time the site has really had such an epic film to count while in the "release to theater" stage. Simply AWESOME!!

Not sure why Davethejew is not posting in this thread but he Pm'ed me the following...

"Also i saw 300 for a second time(with a new girl, who didn't mind the counting) and stopped around 472 right before the big final battle with Xerxes."

Looks like we'll have at least a new #2 once it is finalized.

Are we waiting for an extended or Director's cut for 300, Jen?

Is there anyone planning to do the full count for this? If not, can I do it? I thought I'd continue my Gerard Butler streak. ;D

We don't need to wait. Just use whatever is released. If an unrated, extended or director's cut is initially released use that. If is released in the future we will update the page then (damn double dipping ::)).

Kewl! I'm counting down. Amazon.com says the DVD will be released July 31. I'll also keep an eye out for unrated, extended or director's cuts. Even if I get the regular version, it would be so worth it to get any other versions in the future as well.

I seem to be getting quite a number of emails today from 300 fans to get this film on the site. I really wish they would take the time to look around first so that they would understand that we want an accurate count.

I'd really love to get this movie on the site. This film has the possibility of being number one. But how do they expect us to count this? Using a bootleg copy?

Aside from the fact that this site only uses legitimate versions, a bootleg would be selling the movie short. Even the best bootlegs won't allow us to look through a scene step by step, in fractions of seconds, and that's the only way to examine some scenes to get the most accurate counts out of them. Bootlegs are notoriously blurred, especially where there's a lot of action going on.

In order for this movie to get the best chance of being number one, every battle, every fight has to be looked through second by second to get that body here, that body there, that might be tucked away in some corner of the frame where you wouldn't see it going normal speed. Definitely won't happen with a bootleg. It might take several days, but it will be worth it.

I can't wait for the DVD to come out. I remember thinking to myself during the movie, "OMG, this will be crazy to count." Crazier even than Return of the King. You've got two or three Spartans or more killing at the same time in the same frame, and there are bodies everywhere, I mean everywhere.

I seriously think that this will snatch the number one spot if counted accurately and milked as much as possible, but that will only happen with a legitimate DVD (and an HD one at that). ;D

Hi all, I realize I'm a newbie here, but I was curious on where you're drawing the line with some of the kill counts for this movie. My biggest concern is whether or not the sinking ships count. By NO MEANS should anyone take this as a serious count, I'm using it to illustrate a point.

In the first hour, I counted 517 kills alone, but that was including 312 kills on ships (13 ships x 24 people per ship - they're all the same ship type, and I counted one ship. I'm assuming a bit more) The ships alone beat out Hard Boiled. Unfair advantage with CG? How's this going to pan out?

I've been working on this since I got the DVD on Tuesday. I'm re-checking the big battles now. I should have a count ready this weekend. :)

I half expected this to make the top spot, but when I think about it, the extended edition of LotR: RotK (251 minutes) is more than twice as long as this movie (117 minutes), and the scale of the battles in RotK was enormous. The count I have will probably be no more than 550, but not less than 500.

Thanks Amie. I figured you would have it soon.

As Dave has stated hieyeck we rarely allow new people to do gigantic counts here. It is important to have an understanding of the guidelines to do these so that we do not end up with errors.

Baby bones – misc
2:49 Boy beaten to death by Leonidas as a boy – 1
(Narrator stated that the boys in the agoge are taught “if necessary, to kill” just after Leonidas gets up from beating the boy. Also, there was the tell-tale splatter of blood which I’ve equated with kills in the movie.)
Giant wolf by Leonidas as a teen – misc
Chapter total: 1

Chapter 2: Messenger From Persia
Skulls of conquered kings – misc

Chapter 3: Sparta’s Reply
Messenger kicked into well by Leonidas – 1
12:49 Bodyguard by Captain/sword – 1
12:53, :54 Bodyguards by Spartans (in background) by sword – 2
(Bodyguards are seen being pushed towards the well but I only counted the ones seen falling into the well – see below.)
12:58, :59, 13:03 (One stabbed with sword before falling) – Messenger’s bodyguards thrown into well by Spartans – 5
Chapter total: 9

Chapter 9: Hunters of Men’s Souls
Burning village- misc
Dead horse - misc
Girl dies – 1
Bodies pinned to tree (only distinguishable bodies under zoom) – 10
Most of the numbers in this body count where bodies are piled together or strewn are minimums. I also don’t count blobs in the far distance, which could be rocks, shields, horses, etc.
Chapter total: 11

Persian ships battered and sunk by hurricane – misc
34:25, :26, :29, 30(from ship on the right) Persian sailors falling into stormy sea – 5
34:44 Persian sailors on ship seen just before it sinks, including one on the bow – 6
34:46 Sailors falling into sea – 2
Sailors on second ship (the one on the right) distinguishable on ship before it sinks – min 3
Bodies in the sea- 8
Chapter total: 24

Chapter 12: Wall of the Dead

38:27, :49, :59. 39:08, 39:09 Bodies in rock wall – 12
Single body parts such as feet and hands - misc
Chapter total: 19

Chapter 14: Hot Gates Battle
Note: In battle, I count a kill when a body is seen being stabbed, pierced, bludgeoned or sliced by the killer. If the killer is doing these actions but there is no body or any part of it onscreen, it isn’t counted.
Captain of first wave of Persians , by Spartan spear – 1
46:51, 47:02, :03, :05, :07, :11(cutaways), :17, :21, :24, :25, :26, :31, :33, :36, :37, :40(on left), :41, :42, :52, :56, :58, 48:05, :08, :23, :37, :39, :47, :52, :58, 49:05 Persians by Spartans/spear – 62

47:36, :43 Persians by Astinos/spear - 2
47:45, :46, :51, 48:08, :12, :31 Bodies - 7
48:28 Persian by Leonidas/spear thrown – 1
(I just wanted to note this one because it was odd. Two Persians, the spear hits one’s chest, they both fall. These might be Siamese Twins? I could only see 3 legs between the two of them. Would still count as one though—or would they? We don’t have a bodycount rule for Siamese twins, do we? lol)
49:00 Persian by Spartan (previously deflected by Leonidas’s shield) – 1
(I didn’t count the Persians that Leonidas deflected with his shield. The point seems to have been to get forward as fast and as far as he can while killing as many as he can, at the same time leaving anyone else he couldn’t kill to the Spartans behind.)
48:35, :37, :44, :47(maimed, mortal wound), :51, 49:07 Persians by Leonidas/sword - 6

Chapter 21: Blood-Drunk
Note: I’ve tried my best not to count bodies again that I’ve already counted. I tried to keep the layouts of the bodies in mind so that if I see them again I won’t count them again. But the camera in this scene was circling around the battle, and sometimes the angle of the camera will change and if I don’t recognize those bodies, I’ll count them. Sometimes the camera will move further left or right, backwards or forwards, and the next frame might include bodies already counted along with the bodies not yet counted—hence, some of my numbers will have ‘not yet counted’ next to them.

1:12:40, :42, :45, :48, :50, :51, :54, :58, 1:13:03, :06, :09, :17, :20, :22, :26, :29, :39, :47, :52 Persians by Astinos/sword – 18

I’ve tried my best to find all the individual kills of the characters above. The helmets made it a little difficult, although they did have individual characteristics that distinguished them from others. Astinos had straight dark hair that was shorter than Stelios’, who had fine, longish blond hair, while Captain had coarse, steel-grey hair. Dilios had short hair covered by his helmet (and how can I forget that face from LotR?). Leonidas was the easiest with that big horsehair crest on his helmet.

If I’ve missed anything, any corrections or additions are welcome.
