Whew!
I was conservative in counting this. There were a lot of scenes where it was almost impossible to count accurately even with pause, slow motion and step features, so I'm undercounting rather than overcounting:
1. In a battle, if I didn't see an actual body being run through with a sword, knifed or shot by arrow, it wasn't counted, although the character can be seen doing these actions.
2. If it wasn't run through with a sword, knifed, shot by an arrow or slashed with an axe, the body was merely knocked out, so it wasn't counted.
3. I'm not including the CGI count (indicated above) in the total body count.
4. The battle scene body counts are probably higher than I've counted. Some of the deaths were just a blur.. for example when Sauron sweeps those soldiers away with his club, it was hard to determine a body from a shield or a cape. I counted bodies that clearly looked like bodies only.
5. I'm still debating on whether I should have included the skeletons of the goblins and dwarves in "Moria." They were clearly props.
6. I'm including the destruction of Sauron's body in the prologue... although his spirit remains alive, the destruction of his body was too spectacular to ignore.
This is one of the most beloved movies of all time. There's bound to be some disagreement with my counts.

I'm working up the courage to do The Two Towers next.
Question: We don't include CGI deaths, do we? Like those orcs falling off the cliff after being hit by arrows... they looked CGI to me.
Also, those goblin and dwarf skeletons in Moria: Do we include those? If I do, how much of the skeleton do I have to see to count them? I know you said before that skulls don't count. I did count the skeletons that were given more than a few seconds screen time... like the skeleton holding the book and the one that Pippin nudged into the well.

We better include CGI/SFX deaths, half the horror movies i'm working on have CGI characters killed, and theyre included in the counts

You have to count CGI characters, although surely only strictly on-screen deaths would count. Because non-human characters aren't exactly subject to the same rules of dying... so I'd say go with the most conservative counting method possible, and add them to the future ones.
Great job doing this film though, my parents own all three extended editions and I wasn't game to touch them.

Thanks guys! OK, I've modified the count to include the CGI deaths. (I still feel that I've undercounted, but better to undercount that to overcount, right? )

That's fine. If some fan wants to contest it we'll deal with it then. As long as we can get something close.
I admire you for doing this as well!!
